Hoichibell

Bell and Monk Hoichi sitting together

Monk Hoichi (芳一, Hōichi) is the rector of Worldly Desire Temple. After his father died of a lighting strike, he took over the temple. He lives there with his daughter Bell. He practices mendicancy to keep the temple running, and will visit Long Life Town everyday in the mornings after 500z has been donated.

Be mindful that he can run you over with his motorcycle, doing 8 points of damage to your heart.

Getting the Kiss[]

Hint[]

Monk Hoichi will not speak with you unless you do what he suggests when you try to talk to him. Look into that first, and check in with him until he is satisfied enough to talk with you. (NOTE: The player should be at least at Level 3 before finishing this quest.)

Hint 2
If you want a better idea of how much he wants you to donate collectively: 1000z is too much, 100z is too little.

Hint 3
After donating enough, make sure to exhaust his conversation options. Not only is it important to get more info from him, but you need to get him to go somewhere else for mendicancy. Maybe you should give him a little more money when you see him there the next day?

Hint 4
The monk mentions his father writing something important on his head. His head looks similar to a grain of rice, calling to mind the practice of writing on individual grains of rice. Can you find a tool that would be used to read a rice grain's writing?

Hint 5
Someone might sell this specific tool you need.

Hint 6
Once you've read the writing on his head, have you seen anything the temple area that corresponds to it? The item you bought from Monk Hoichi (you only need one) will be relevant.

Solution
Make sure you have at least 10 hearts of health before completing this, the damage is unavoidable.

Make 5 donations of 100z at the donation box in front of the temple (you need to donate 500z at least; donating more than that is not necessary but will still work). Speak with Monk Hoichi, making sure to ask "Where do you go?", and he will tell you he will go to Long Life Town for more donations. The following day and from then on, he can be found near the crosswalk in Long Life Town in the mornings. Donate another 100z, and he will give you Incense Sticks, which you will need for the next part of the puzzle.

Monk Hoichi has writing on his head which can be read with a Magnifying Glass, which can be bought from Mr. Cheapot for 880z. Using it on the monk reveals the following names, in their numbered order: 1. Takeda, 2. Mouri, 3. Uesugi, 4. Oda, 5. Toyotomi, 6. Tokugawa. These refer to gravestones found in the graveyard in the temple area, which you can light incense at. The directions to light incense in the correct order of gravestones is:

1. At the pair of gravestones that is most northeast within the center of the graveyard area (all directions are relative to the position of the camera), just below the path that runs alongside the forest, light Takeda's grave on the left.

2. Next is the pair of gravestones on the other side of the train tracks. Light Mouri's grave on the right.

3. Next is back in the center of the graveyard, to the southwest and directly opposite of the first pair of gravestones you visited. Light Uesugi's gravestone on the right.

4. In the grassy secluded area with the bare tree far to the southeast, where Voodoo Doll's hole is, light Oda's grave on the left.

5. Back in the central area, go to the pair of gravestones that are northwest, the one closest to the stairs up to the temple. Light Toyotomi's grave on the left.

6. The last grave is east in the central area, not too far. It's where you first talked to Mr. Inoue. Light Tokugawa's grave on the right, right next to him.

You do not have to light the graves at night, and it's advisable to light them during the daytime, as it is easier to navigate the cemetery then to avoid the Grim Reaper that appears at night.

After you have successfully lit them, the sky will go dark and lightning will strike the grave (this does 9 points of damage to your heart). You will receive "Dad's Wooden Gong"; take this to Monk Hoichi to earn your kiss.

Speak with Mr. Inoue, located next to the now destroyed grave from the lightning, and he will praise you for getting the original gong back. You will receive the "Love Ink" in return.
